Why California Apostille Requests Get Rejected

Many California apostille requests are delayed or rejected because the document does not meet the Secretary of State’s requirements. The most common problems include incomplete notarizations, unofficial copies, missing signatures, or documents issued by the wrong authority.

For example, a birth certificate must be a certified copy issued by the proper county recorder or state agency. A notarized document must contain a complete California notarial certificate. If the notary wording is incorrect or incomplete, the apostille cannot be issued.

FBI background checks require special handling and must be properly authenticated before submission. Court documents and school records also have specific certification requirements.

Understanding these requirements before filing can prevent costly delays and repeated submissions.

If you are unsure whether your document qualifies, review the official California Secretary of State guidelines or consider professional review before submitting your apostille request.
